The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council is seeking Community members to fill future vacancies on the Racial and Ethnic Equity Committee.

What is the CJCC?

The Harris County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) was created by the Order of the Harris County Commissioners Court in 2009.

The 17-member Council works collectively to manage systemic challenges facing Harris County's criminal justice system and strengthen the overall well-being of our communities by developing and recommending policies and practices that improve public safety, promote fairness, equity, and accountability, and reduce unnecessary incarceration and criminal justice involvement in Harris County. The Council collects and evaluates local criminal justice data to identify systemic issues and facilitates collaboration between agencies, experts, and community service providers to improve Harris County's criminal justice system in accordance with best practices. 

What is the REE Committee?

The Racial and Ethnic Equity Committee (REE) is charged by the CJCC to center the voices of those historically marginalized by the current mode of justice and acknowledge the racial disparities built into the current justice model. The Committee will work to correct those discrepancies using data and restorative practices to promote an equitable, transparent, and community-driven program that serves every individual and ensures our communities ae safe, fair, and equitable.

The REE Committee focuses on identifying and addressing racial and ethnic disparities and facilitating equity initiatives through community engagement. The Committee structure consists of 13 community stakeholders and 4 Harris County agency representatives that serve one-year terms. 

Who should apply?

Applicants may include representatives of community groups, service providers working with justice-involved individuals, members of the criminal justice system including, advocates/advocacy groups, subject-matter experts and other interested individuals. Preference will be given to those applicants that have lived experience with the criminal justice system. Emphasis will be placed on ensuring geographic representation from parts of the county most impacted by the criminal justice system. Individuals with lived experience such as justice-involved individuals and individuals impacted by crime/violence are strongly encouraged to apply. 

What level of commitment is required to serve on the Committee?

Committee members should be available to dedicate at least 8 hours per month to the work of the Committee. Committee meetings and relevant working sessions will be scheduled based on the availability of the Committee Members. Specific dates and times have not been determined yet.
